In 1900 songwriters Will A. Heelan and J. Fred Helf released the song “Every Race Has a Flag but the Coon”. The song was popular in the U.S. and Britain. The song was promoted as one of the greatest musical hits of the day by A.M. Rothschild and Company in 1901. It was song by over 100 popular artists for years until 1920 when the members of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League under the leadership of Marcus Garvey at a month-long convention held at Madison Square Garden in New York City created a flag in response to the song. The RED would represent the blood that unites all people of African ancestry. The BLACK would represent Black people and the GREEN would represent the land and wealth of Africa. “Show me the race or the nation without a flag, and I will show you a race of people without any pride. Aye! In song and mimicry they have said, “Every race has a flag but the coon.” How true! Aye! But that was said of us four years ago. They can’t say it now….” – Marcus Garvey 1921. MUCH LOVE TO MARCUS GARVEY AND THE UNIA. RBG SALUTE.
