Its believed to have genuine African American origins meaning it possibly was created and sung by enslaved Blacks as a work song. It was published by the Virginia Minstrels for their blackface minstrel show. Most of the theories are It’s a story told from a slave’s point of view about how his master died from the sting of one blue-tail fly and the rejoicing over that death. “Cracking corn” is believed to be opening a bottle of corn liquor.
